Isaiah 55:1-5

An amazing chapter of Isaiah following closely on the heels of at least two other amazing chapters. I have pointed out in other devotions that the chapter divisions in our Bibles are not always well placed. This is one such spot. I don’t even want to answer the why question about my statement because I would love for you to go back and read chapters 53 and 54 on your own. But chapter 55 bursts from Isaiah’s masterful palette and screams of the love of God for His people. And perhaps love for those who aren’t quite sure where they stand. And the key is the use of the word “come” again and again throughout these five verses.

What is so wonderful on the surface is this: in order to attend any special event under the auspices of the One who blesses, there must be an invitation. God is the Master of this banquet pictured by Isaiah and God is the one extending the call repeated, “Come!”

Centuries later our Savior, Jesus, would offer the same call. Remember Matthew 11? “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” From the earliest of times God has offered those He has made everything they need. To sustain their earthly lives, yes. But even more importantly, what we need for spiritual life, eternal life, resurrection life.

He invites us to come. To sit. To partake and yes, to live. How could anyone say “no?” I guess that’s for another meditation. In the meantime, get up and come to the Savior. He’s waiting.
