Sticky Love

Deuteronomy 7:6-9

Deuteronomy chapter seven, although a statement of the calling of Israel, has a great deal to speak to all humanity. As so often happens, the interaction between God and Israel carries with it elements that God wants the world to understand. After all, God called the people of

Abraham to be His covenant witnesses. They failed in part. But so as to not unduly pick on them, everyone in history chosen to do the same has had the same result. Well, all except one Man; the God-Man Jesus of Nazareth.

God lays out for His people the simplicity of the motivation of His call. He had made a promise. The One for whom it is impossible to lie had made a promise to a wandering pagan and the promise was set. Within that promise was love. And because it came as a result of promise there was a certain “stickiness” to it. God spoke to the people in this passage of His great love for them. And remember, God knew they would fail. Again and again. Now the world’s part is to understand that God’s love is also extended to all the peoples of all nations for the very same reason. Because the promise God made to Abraham was for the blessing of all nations, all families (see Genesis 12:1-3).

There’s something to be said for “sticky love.” And when the source is Love Himself, well … those included can bank on that love. I promise.
